“Do the thing that scares you.” Make this your new motto, and it will lead you to new joys and passions you never would have imagined. Letting joy and passion lead your life decisions is a great way to have a fulfilling and happy life. Doing the things that scare you can help you find even more passions and joys that you never knew existed! Here are some tips for finding the joy and passion in your life by doing what scares you:

1. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

As you go about your regular daily routine, try stepping out of your comfort zone. Pick a new seat, try a new flavor, talk to someone new, volunteer, sign up for something, raise your hand, etc. Whatever it is that makes up your safety bubble, or comfort zone, stretch out a little and see what lies beyond your own comfort.

2. Try New Things

This goes along with stepping out of your comfort zone, but trying new things goes into every aspect of your life. Try something new every day, whether it is trying a new clothing combination, hairstyle or dancing. Try something new, even if it scares you – you might end up finding a new talent and passion!

3. Be Brave

Do the thing that scares you, be brave and step outside yourself. This is the only way you will discover new facets of your talents and personality. Something that was once a weakness could become strength, if only you can step outside yourself and be brave – even if it is only for a few minutes.

4. Fake It ‘Til You Make It

Most everyone knows the phrase, “fake it ’til you make it,” what you may not know is how many people actually do this on a regular basis. Leaders are not always born, public speakers are not always naturals, many of the people around you, who look like they have it all together, are (or have been) “faking it, until they make it” on a regular basis. So, put on a brave face and fake it, like you know what you are doing until you do!

  • Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli contain Sulforaphane which may block enzymes linked to joint deterioration and chronic inflammation.
  • Watermelon contains lycopene, a cellular inhibitor for inflammatory processes.
  • Berries have polyphenol compounds which moderate inflammation.
  • Cold-water fish are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids protect against the causes and effects of chronic inflammation.

Fight the Pain: How Mindfulness Meditation Reduces Inflammation

It’s no secret that chronic inflammation contributes to poor health. Inflammation can actually be a healthy response to an infection or injury, but too much of it for too long can damage your gut, your joints or other parts of your body when an autoimmune response is triggered.

Chronic inflammation can be managed with a number of different techniques, and research has found a new tool to add to that list: meditation.

The Scientific Research

Consider the following scientific studies:

  • A 2013 study found that eight weeks of mindfulness meditation could reduce stress-induced inflammation. The study was conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, supported by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
  • Qigong, a form of moving meditation similar to tai chi, was effective in reducing C-reactive protein levels in cancer patients in a trial conducted in 2007 and 2008. CRP is a key marker of chronic inflammation.
  • Researchers found that yogic meditation may reduce the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines in a 2010 study of family caregivers of dementia patients.

Other studies have reported similar results.

Implement the Practice

If moving meditation sounds like something you’d be interested in, look for local classes. Tai chi and qigong are low impact and gentle exercises that include meditative practices. Yoga often involves stretching, which may not be great for all medical conditions, but yoga instructors often focus on whole body health and include meditation in their lessons. Walking meditation may also be an option.

Finding Spirituality Through Grief: A Silver Lining

At some point in our lives, all of us embark on a quest for meaning. Everyone approaches this journey in a different way. People suddenly find themselves believing that life does not end with death, or that energy is a real entity. It is a beautiful consequence of a terrible event, and it is precisely this paradoxical nature of things that people come to understand while expanding their spiritual selves.

Healing Takes Mindfulness Work

Cancer. When a doctor gives you or a loved one that diagnosis, it can be overwhelming. Your mind may race with questions or “what ifs.” You may doubt yourself and your ability to beat the odds.

It is also common to experience a wide range of emotions — and struggle with these emotions — upon receiving and coping with a cancer diagnosis. You will do well to recapture the strength of your mind and refocus it on creating healthy beliefs, thoughts and attitudes that can bring positive power back into your emotions and feelings. Using mindfulness to manage your inner strength can make manifest your healthy, best life.
