Letting Joy and Passion Lead Your Life Decisions, Do what Scares You

“Do the thing that scares you.” Make this your new motto, and it will lead you to new joys and passions you never would have imagined. Letting joy and passion lead your life decisions is a great way to have a fulfilling and happy life. Doing the things that scare you can help you find even more passions and joys that you never knew existed! Here are some tips for finding the joy and passion in your life by doing what scares you:

1. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

As you go about your regular daily routine, try stepping out of your comfort zone. Pick a new seat, try a new flavor, talk to someone new, volunteer, sign up for something, raise your hand, etc. Whatever it is that makes up your safety bubble, or comfort zone, stretch out a little and see what lies beyond your own comfort.

2. Try New Things

This goes along with stepping out of your comfort zone, but trying new things goes into every aspect of your life. Try something new every day, whether it is trying a new clothing combination, hairstyle or dancing. Try something new, even if it scares you – you might end up finding a new talent and passion!

3. Be Brave

Do the thing that scares you, be brave and step outside yourself. This is the only way you will discover new facets of your talents and personality. Something that was once a weakness could become strength, if only you can step outside yourself and be brave – even if it is only for a few minutes.

4. Fake It ‘Til You Make It

Most everyone knows the phrase, “fake it ’til you make it,” what you may not know is how many people actually do this on a regular basis. Leaders are not always born, public speakers are not always naturals, many of the people around you, who look like they have it all together, are (or have been) “faking it, until they make it” on a regular basis. So, put on a brave face and fake it, like you know what you are doing until you do!

If you would like to learn more about finding your joy and passion in life, you need Melanie. Your first 30 minute consultation is free, so make that first step today to a better tomorrow.

Is Inflammation Destroying Your Health?

Inflammation is a healthy process that comes to your body’s aid when you injure yourself. For example, if you cut your finger while making a meal, your body’s inflammatory response sends in an army of white blood cells to the scene that destroy lurking bacteria and mend any ragged tissue. There are 2 types of inflammation.

1. Acute Inflammation

  • Acute inflammation is short-term and occurs after a scrape, cut, sprained ankle, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, and appendicitis.

2. Chronic Inflammation

  • Chronic inflammation is long-term and occurs when you suffer from conditions such as autoimmune diseases, osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Crohn’s disease. Some contributing factors are your environment and lifestyle.

Chronic inflammation contributes to poor health. The good news is, you can eliminate the foods that irritate your body and eat more of those that fight inflammation to ease the symptoms that make you feel uncomfortable. Nutritionists recommend that you incorporate more of the following foods into your diet:

  • Avocados contain excellent anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli contain Sulforaphane which may block enzymes linked to joint deterioration and chronic inflammation.
  • Watermelon contains lycopene, a cellular inhibitor for inflammatory processes.
  • Berries have polyphenol compounds which moderate inflammation.
  • Cold-water fish are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids protect against the causes and effects of chronic inflammation.

According to Dr. Frank Lipman, you can determine if you have inflammation by testing your blood’s level of C-reactive protein. Some of the warning signs you should know about are:

Fighting chronic inflammation can require big changes, and the payoff is even bigger. Melanie will help you find the solutions that are right for you.

How Meditation Can Bring You a More Peaceful and Healthy Life

It’s no secret that technology has done some incredible things for humanity. We can see and talk to a loved one from across the world and are now able to fight diseases that were thought to be incurable a short time ago. But these advancements have come at a great cost. The modern world has lost its focus. We are more connected than ever with one another, but we’re more anxious and isolated than ever before. Mindfulness exercises like meditation are great ways to fight this trend and gain a true sense of clarity. The science is starting to show the incredible benefits of these exercises.

Here are 3 ways that mindfulness can affect the brain:

1. Lowers Blood Pressure:

According to WebMD, mindfulness exercises like meditation are proven to promote relaxation and lower blood pressure.

2. Improves Concentration:

Our busy lives might have been made slightly easier at times by the convenience of smart phones, but they haven’t necessarily made them better. Mindfulness exercises are scientifically proven to promote concentration by asking the participant to focus on one thing and one thing only.

3. Lowers Stress, Boosts Immunity

Mindfulness exercises are great at fighting stress and anxiety. This stress reduction has a notable positive affect on the body’s immune system.

I’m an experienced coach with extensive training and certifications, here to help you live a better, fuller life. I believe that exercises like meditation have the power to help you live a deeper and more peaceful life. Your first 30 minute consultation is free. For more information, contact me today!

Fight the Pain: How Mindfulness Meditation Reduces Inflammation

It’s no secret that chronic inflammation contributes to poor health. Inflammation can actually be a healthy response to an infection or injury, but too much of it for too long can damage your gut, your joints or other parts of your body when an autoimmune response is triggered.

Chronic inflammation can be managed with a number of different techniques, and research has found a new tool to add to that list: meditation.

The Scientific Research

Consider the following scientific studies:

  • A 2013 study found that eight weeks of mindfulness meditation could reduce stress-induced inflammation. The study was conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, supported by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
  • Qigong, a form of moving meditation similar to tai chi, was effective in reducing C-reactive protein levels in cancer patients in a trial conducted in 2007 and 2008. CRP is a key marker of chronic inflammation.
  • Researchers found that yogic meditation may reduce the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines in a 2010 study of family caregivers of dementia patients.

Other studies have reported similar results.

So how can you add meditation to your arsenal of healing tools?

Implement the Practice

If moving meditation sounds like something you’d be interested in, look for local classes. Tai chi and qigong are low impact and gentle exercises that include meditative practices. Yoga often involves stretching, which may not be great for all medical conditions, but yoga instructors often focus on whole body health and include meditation in their lessons. Walking meditation may also be an option.

If you’d prefer to get started right away, mindfulness meditation or transcendental meditation can be practiced anywhere.

Finding Spirituality Through Grief: A Silver Lining

At some point in our lives, all of us embark on a quest for meaning. Everyone approaches this journey in a different way. For some, it begins in a temple, church, or mosque, where, for others, it starts with an unforgettable quote from a book or movie. But for many the road to spirituality is made clear by experiencing a terrible loss.

The powerful poet, Mary Oliver, once said, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.” In other words, all of the emotions, even the most difficult ones, have a purpose. And it is a growing belief that one of the greatest reasons for grief, is that it brings us closer to Spirit.

Science tells us that when we grieve, we go through several stages. Denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance. And, as anyone who has lost someone knows, these stages are not linear. We can weave in and out of them, sometimes for years, before we find true relief. But, perhaps we should add a new phase of grief: Meaning. Because there is no time in our lives when we feel the need to connect with something greater than ourselves than when we are grieving a significant loss.

For many people, a new-found belief in the spiritual world is what emerges out of the grief process. People suddenly find themselves believing that life does not end with death, or that energy is a real entity. It is a beautiful consequence of a terrible event, and it is precisely this paradoxical nature of things that people come to understand while expanding their spiritual selves.

Does Colon Health Matter?

If you  haven’t tried a colon cleanse yet, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. When it comes to our intestines, it’s not an easy subject – but did you know that nearly 70% of your immune system lives there?! We want to live better, fuller, healthier lives, which means we can’t afford to ignore our colon health.

Cleansing your colon is beneficial to your overall health. It is an alternative medical therapy that removes toxins from your colon and intestinal tract. The practice dates back to ancient Greece. The premise of natural colon cleansing is a belief that undigested foods cause mucus to build up in your colon. The buildup produces toxins which may enter your blood stream and poison your body. Information about current colon cleansing methods is below.

Colon Cleansing Methods

Supplements: You can take some supplements orally and others you can take through your rectum. The products are available in grocery stores and pharmacies. Options include an enema, special teas, and laxatives.

Colonic: A colon hydrotherapist performs the procedure while you lie on a table. A low-pressure pump flushes water through a small tube inserted into your rectum. The therapist massages your abdomen after the water is in and then you release it during a regular bowel movement.

Colon Cleanse Benefits

Some of the symptoms that indicate you may need a colon cleansing are constipation, bad breath, aches, fatigue, body odor and acne. Our 6 favorite potential benefits of a good colon cleanse follow.

1. Effective Digestion System: A cleansed colon pushes undigested waste through smoothly and easily.

2. Regularity: Colon cleansing helps to maintain regularity and prevent constipation.

3. Increased Energy: The release of toxins helps to rejuvenate your body. The detoxification may improve blood circulation, alleviate insomnia and boost your energy.

4. Absorption of Nutrients: A cleansed colon allows more vitamins and other nutrients to absorb into your bloodstream. Once it is free from toxins, these essential nutrients can filter in freely.

5. Weight Loss: A cleansing increases your metabolism and removes mucus that sticks to your intestinal walls and weighs down the tract. An empty colon is lighter than a clogged one, and more efficient.

6. Reflex Points: A cleansing stimulates the reflex points of your colon and affects corresponding body parts in a positive way.

This is only one step on a journey to a better life and a healthier you.

Healing Takes Mindfulness Work

Cancer. When a doctor gives you or a loved one that diagnosis, it can be overwhelming. Your mind may race with questions or “what ifs.” You may doubt yourself and your ability to beat the odds.

It is also common to experience a wide range of emotions — and struggle with these emotions — upon receiving and coping with a cancer diagnosis. Fear, frustration, isolation, hopelessness, helplessness, despair, lack of control, dissatisfaction and disempowerment may describe some of these difficult feelings.

You may feel angry about your ability to manage these emotions, especially when comparing them to how you want to feel. And you may feel angry about your emotional capacity to effectively face your cancer diagnosis, versus how you expect yourself to face the diagnosis. You may also lash out at others in frustration about this and other challenges that you face.

A cancer diagnosis may put you in a situation where you are forced to consider putting your health and bodily welfare on the top of your priority list. You may feel uncomfortable with this situation, but as difficult as it may be for you, it is an opportunity for you to re-prioritize your life.

Think about it. These challenges force you to consider how you really want your life to be. What do you value? What are your dreams? A cancer diagnosis is about more than fighting a disease. You’ve been given an opportunity to make choices about what you want your best life to look like.

The trick with all this is retraining yourself to prioritize your health and good life above all else. This starts with getting rid of poor habits that have eroded your thought patterns. You will do well to recapture the strength of your mind and refocus it on creating healthy beliefs, thoughts and attitudes that can bring positive power back into your emotions and feelings. Using mindfulness to manage your inner strength can make manifest your healthy, best life.

Accepting your current situation and making the decision to improve upon it is the first step on this Conscious Cancer Journey.

Although it may very well be possible to make life changes and heal from cancer on one’s own, consider the approach of athletes who decide to work with coaches to achieve success. This same option is available to those who struggle with chronic illness, like cancer.

Partnering with a veteran coach can help you create the healthy life of your dreams! A coach can assist you in developing mindful habits to harness your inner power and focus it on manifesting your best life.

See These 4 Eye Health Tips Up Close

Your eyes are organs that react to light and allow sight. They have 3 coats that enclose 3 transparent structures. Several diseases, disorders and age-related changes can affect your eyes. Follow the health tips below to maintain healthy vision.

1. Get a Comprehensive Dilated Eye Examination

Visiting an eye care professional is the best way to determine whether your eyes are healthy. The exam can detect problems such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

2. Eat for Eye Health

Eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits adds certain nutrients to your diet that can help save and preserve your vision. According to research, your eye health benefits from these foods – especially leafy greens and carrots.

3. Protect Your Peepers

Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from dangerous solar radiation. Make sure you have a pair that blocks 100 percent of UV rays and absorbs HEV rays. The wraparound style frames provide the best protection.

4. Visual Stretches Fight Eye Strain

Give your eyes a break from the computer and reading material. You can try the 20-20-20 blink method. Every 20 minutes look away about 20 feet for 20 seconds. This helps reduce strain.

BONUS TIP: Take Better Care of Your Glasses and Contacts

Keep your eyeglasses clean by rinsing the lenses under warm water and then washing them with liquid dish soap. Polish them with a microfiber cleaning cloth after they dry. Pre-moistened lens towelettes are fine for occasional use. If you have contact lenses make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before handling them. Use a prescribed cleaner or drops and your finger is the perfect tool to rub the cleanser in a circular motion. Do not use water because it may contain irritants.
